We need not wait for the government or the central bank to save us: we can set this system up ourselves. It costs taxpayers nothing. It bypasses the greedy banks. It recharges local economies and gives local businesses an advantage over multinationals. It can be tailored to the needs of the community. It does not require – as Eddie George, the former governor of the Bank of England, insisted – that one part of the country be squeezed so that another can prosper.

An Al-Jazeera reporter braves the streets of Israel to report on sentiment in “the Jewish street” (a phrase I use with the same seriousness I believe “the Arab street” deserves, which is to say none). It’s in Arabic but what he’s saying is largely beside the point. When was the last time you saw a western reporter wade into a crowd of hostile Arabs to get their opinion on the war in Iraq (this reporter asks about Israeli opinion of Hizbullah)?

Israel’s “military deterrent” has now been repeatedly discredited as a means to force Palestinians and other Arabs to accept Zionist supremacy as inevitable and permanent. Now, the other pillar of Israeli power — Western support and complicity — is starting to crack. We must do all we can to push it over.
